Converted File

Instructions

Use the latest snapshot build for testing or you might not see everything.

Download the PO file for translation from Weblate.

  1. Go to https://translations.vivaldi.com/projects/vivaldi/vivaldi-browser/
  2. Click on the name of your language in the list
  3. On the following page click on the "Download" button inside the right box labeled Project Information
  4. In the menu dropdown click "Download original translation file (Gettext PO file)" or "Download translation as Gettext PO" (it does not matter which)
  5. Save the file
  6. Convert the file to JSON

Load the downloaded file in this page (everything runs locally, no data sent to any server)

Save it where you can find it! (or look into the downloads folder after saving.)

"Install" the file for testing.

  1. Put the converted file into the following folder:
[path of the Vivaldi program]\resources\vivaldi\_locales\[your locale]
  2. Rename the messages.json that is that folder to messages.json.original
  3. Rename the converted file to messages.json
  4. Restart the browser and select your language

Hint: You can test your translation even if your locale folder is not yet in: Just replace the messages.json file of a language that you do not need and select that in the browser

W3C/IBM Safe Size

W3C has a document describing guidelines on how to create an UI that works for different languages.

In this document they point to a guideline table created by IBM showing the expected character expansion from English sentences/words to cover the maximum amount of languages.

By checking the checkbox above the translation strings will be expanded with hyphens for matching the expansions on the IBM table.

Thanks
